Standard Guide for Specialty Coatings of Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings

PUBLISH DATE 2026
PAGES 3
ASTM A1135-26

1.1 This guide was developed by the ASTM A04.12 Pipe and Tubes Subcommittee to address the request for specialty coatings applied to cast iron soil pipe and fittings. This guide can be included in the design professionals’ specifications when these specialty coatings are desired.

1.1.1 Cast iron soil pipe and fittings manufactured in accordance with Specification A888, Specification A74, and Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute CISPI 301 are used for drain, waste, and vent (DWV) sanitary and storm water systems installed above and below ground.

1.1.2 This guide applies to coatings applied to cast iron soil pipe and fittings designed for non-pressure, gravity flow systems. It does not address dimensional, mechanical or chemical properties of the cast iron. This information can be found in Specifications A48/A48M, A74, A888, and CISPI 301.

1.1.3 Cast iron soil pipe and fittings with standard asphaltic coatings have a proven track record of use in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) gravity flow systems. Sometimes, specialty coatings are desired for additional protection from more aggressive or low flow drain, waste, and vent (DWV) applications.

1.1.4 This guide purports to address the performance requirements of specialty coatings and some of the proven test methods which pertain to coating performance. As well as the acceptable ranges a coating must conform to meet the performance requirements.

1.2 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

4.1 Internal and External Coatings:

4.1.1 All specialty coatings shall be evenly applied inside and out, free of any paint defects. The coatings shall be applied in accordance with the coating manufacturer’s requirements. Touch marks from the coating application are prohibited on internal coatings. Prior to coating application, the cast iron components shall be cleaned internally and externally according to the coating manufacturer’s substrate requirements. This can include, but is not limited to the removal of rust, molding sand, slag, refractory coatings, and cutting fluids for tapping and threading. Machined threads are permitted to be coated if the coating is designed to do so without sagging into the threaded areas.

4.1.2 The coatings shall not become tacky when exposed to a temperature of 212 °F (100 °C).

4.1.3 The coated products shall meet the following performance requirements:

  • ASTM B117 Salt Spray Test: 350 h minimum
  • Chemical Resistance pH 1 to pH 13: 30 days minimum at 73 °F (23 °C)
  • ASTM D3359 Adhesion Test: 4A or 4B internal, 3A or 3B external
  • Hot Water Resistance: 24 h at 200 °F (95 °C)
  • Thermal Shock Temperature Cycling: 1500 cycles at 57–207 °F (14–97 °C)

4.2 Coating Toxicity:

4.2.1 Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Environmental Data Sheets (EDS) shall be furnished by the coating manufacturer upon request. The manufacturer shall prepare and submit samples when changing sources of supply or coating formulations.

4.2.2 Coatings shall meet the following toxicity requirements:

  • (1) Free of toxic metals above SDS reportable levels.
  • (2) Lead not to exceed levels above 0.06 % (600 ppm); sample preparation per Practice E1645.
  • (3) Asbestos not to exceed current SDS reportable levels.
  • (4) Volatile organic hazardous air pollutants (VOHAPs) not to exceed 2.6 lb/gal of solids applied in accordance with Practice D3960. It is permissible for the coating manufacturer to provide the certification.
