Generic specification for optical fibres

Requirements for geometrical, optical, transmission, mechanical, and environmental properties of optical fibre

Geometrical properties: The optical fibre must have precise core and cladding diameters to ensure consistent light propagation and minimal signal loss. The concentricity of the core relative to the cladding should be maintained within strict tolerances to avoid mode distortion.

Optical properties: The fibre should possess low attenuation to allow light to travel long distances with minimal loss. It must have a high numerical aperture for efficient light gathering and controlled mode distribution. The refractive index profile must be designed to optimize signal quality.

Transmission properties: The fibre must support the desired bandwidth and data rate with minimal dispersion and distortion. It should maintain signal integrity over the required transmission distances, ensuring low bit error rates.

Mechanical properties: The fibre must withstand tensile stresses during installation and operation without breaking. It should exhibit flexibility for routing and bending while maintaining performance. Resistance to microbending and macrobending losses is essential.

Environmental properties: The fibre should be resistant to temperature variations, humidity, and chemical exposure to ensure longevity and reliable performance in different environments. It must also exhibit resistance to radiation and mechanical impacts where applicable.
