Consists of CSA B52:23, Mechanical refrigeration code and CSA B52HB:25, A practical handbook for implementing CSA B52:23, Mechanical refrigeration code
The purpose of this Standard is to minimize the risk of personal injury by providing minimum requirements for the design, construction, installation, inspection, and maintenance of the mechanical refrigeration systems and volatile direct refrigeration systems specified in Clauses 1.2.1 and 1.2.2. Note: This Standard does not directly address protection of property and preservation of the environment.
Application 1.2.1 Except as specified in Clause 1.2.3, this Standard applies to the design, construction, installation, inspection, and maintenance of every refrigeration system as provided for by the "Act" (as defined in Clause 3) and identified in this Standard.
This Standard applies to
Note: When adding or replacing parts [see Item c)], consideration should be given to the premises requirements of Item a)
This Standard does not apply to the following
In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. A list of conversion factors is provided in Annex D. Pressure, unless otherwise stated, is expressed in kilopascals above atmospheric pressure, i.e., gauge pressure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CSA B52HB:25, A practical handbook for implementing CSA B52:23, Mechanical refrigeration code Preface This is the fourth edition of CSA B52HB, A practical handbook for implementing CSA B52:23, Mechanical refrigeration code . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2018, 2016, and 2005. The primary objective of this Handbook is to provide both novice and experienced users of CSA B52 with a concise, user-friendly guide to understanding and implementing the requirements of CSA B52. The CSA B52 Code, which originated in 1939, has been regularly updated throughout the years and is now in its thirteenth edition. This Handbook also briefly describes the evolution of CSA B52, touching on the Code's development process, updates and interpretations, and the relationship between the Code and jurisdictional regulations. Changes in the CSA B52 Standard are reflected in this edition of the Handbook. Users of this Handbook and CSA B52 should regularly check for new editions, errata, or amendments to CSA B52 to confirm the use of the most up-to-date information and requirements. As society continues to evolve and move towards more environmentally responsible refrigerants, there are many safety issues to address. This version of the CSA B52 Handbook provides many of the recommended minimum safety protocols to be adhered to. CSA Group gratefully acknowledges the work of Ian Frost, Craig MacDonald, Tim McRae, Jeanette Scott, and Cathy Turylo in the development of this Handbook. Material on ammonia diffusion tanks was generously provided by James Shou in the third edition. The Technical Committee on the Mechanical Refrigeration Code also contributed to the development of this Handbook.
of CSA B52 The scope of CSA B52 is to provide minimum requirements for the design, construction, installation, inspection, and maintenance of all mechanical refrigeration systems, as provided for by provincial and territorial acts, to minimize the risk of human injury. The Code applies to
The word "adoption" refers to the date a jurisdiction adopts the Code, and not necessarily to the year in which the Code was published. Clause 1.2.3 of CSA B52 has removed exemption d) in the scope of the 13 th edition, thereby bringing refrigeration systems for air conditioning in residential applications into the Standard
