IEC standard frequencies

PUBLISH DATE 2009
PAGES 14

IEC standard frequencies refer to the standardized frequencies established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for electrical power systems and related applications.

These standards ensure compatibility and safety across different electrical devices and systems worldwide by defining common frequency values for alternating current (AC) power supply.

The most commonly recognized IEC standard frequencies are:

  • 50 Hz - widely used in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
  • 60 Hz - predominantly used in North America and parts of South America.

Adhering to these frequencies facilitates the interoperability of electrical equipment and helps maintain grid stability.

IEC 60196:2009 specifies the standard frequencies. The standard frequencies are the frequencies to be adopted for single-phase and three-phase a.c. systems, for installations in ships, for a.c. traction systems, for tools and for aircraft.

This standardization is limited to frequencies up to 10 000 Hz.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1965. It constitutes a technical revision. The main change is the removal of the standard frequencies for the rayon industry.

It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
