IEC 61167 Ed. 4.1 b:2018

Metal halide lamps - Performance specification

PUBLISH DATE 2018
PAGES 1626
IEC 61167 Ed. 4.1 b:2018

Metal halide lamps are a type of high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting that produces light by passing an electric arc through a mixture of vaporized mercury and metal halides.

The performance specification of metal halide lamps includes several key parameters such as luminous efficacy, color temperature, color rendering index (CRI), and lamp life.

Luminous efficacy indicates the efficiency of the lamp in converting electrical power into visible light, typically measured in lumens per watt (lm/W).

Color temperature specifies the hue of the light emitted, ranging from warm (around 3000 K) to cool (up to 6000 K) tones, suitable for different applications.

The color rendering index (CRI) reflects the lamp's ability to accurately reproduce colors compared to a natural light source, with higher values indicating better color fidelity.

Lamp life denotes the expected operating hours before the lamp's brightness diminishes significantly or it fails, typically ranging from 6,000 to 20,000 hours depending on the design and usage conditions.

Other performance factors include warm-up time, restart time, and the consistency of light output over the lamp's lifespan.

IEC 61167:2018+A1:2018 specifies the performance requirements for metal halide lamps for general lighting purposes.

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision.

This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • a) A set of new lamp data sheets has been introduced for lamp types designed for replacing high pressure sodium lamps.
  • b) A set of new lamp data sheets has been introduced for 4 200 K versions of 3 000 K lamp types already in the standard.
  • c) A set of new lamp data sheets has been introduced for new lamp types where high frequency ignition data is important.
  • d) Annex G has been revised to incorporate high frequency ignition. As a consequence of this change, all data sheets in the standard have been revised to a new format.
  • e) A new informative Annex K has been introduced, giving recommended methods of making lamp temperature measurements.

This consolidated version consists of the fourth edition (2018) and its amendment 1 (2018). Therefore, no need to order amendment in addition to this publication.
