Communication protocols, terminology, metadata requirements, cybersecurity procedures, and data access controls to support global interoperability among industry participants are defined in this standard.

It establishes a common language for the creation, consumption, transformation, and exchange of human body data and modeled humanoids, including associated apparel and wearable representations through the concepts of covers and coveroids.

By promoting standardized data interoperability, the standard enables greater flexibility, transparency, functionality, and performance across data systems.

The standard does not specify scanning technologies, hardware, software, data-capture methods, imaging systems, medical equipment, or the algorithms used to generate humanoids or coveroids.

This standard addresses the anthropometric and topophysiological attributes that contribute to the quality of experience of 3D body processing, as well as identifying and analyzing metrics and other useful information, as well as data relating to these attributes.

The standard defines a harmonized framework, a suite of objective and subjective methods, tools, and workflows for assessing 3D body processing quality of experience attributes.

The standard specifies and defines methods, metrics, and mechanisms to facilitate interoperability, communication, security, and trusted operation of 3D body processing technologies.

This includes the quality of output of devices (such as sensors and/or scanners), digitization, simulation and modeling, analytics and animation, data transmission and visualization in the 3D body processing ecosystem, the ecosystem being in the near environment that interacts with the body.

3D body processing technologies are emerging as the next wave for how people interact and engage in a range of semi-to-fully immersive experiences to shop, play, maintain wellness, and learn.

The quantity of digital versions of customers/consumers, including anthropometric and topophysiological data of themselves, is expanding. Retailers are using more digital products for product development and consumer interactions. Solution providers are delivering more content based on digital versions of customers/consumers.

The purpose of this standard is to establish a uniform means for designing and implementing immersive experiences by delivering the ability to evaluate the quality of experience for 3D body processing technologies for solution providers, consumers, and the 3D body processing ecosystem (e.g., retail, health/wellness, sports/athletics, medical industries, apparel, entertainment industry, and fashion).

This standard focuses on the in-vivo, external imaging of non-rigid human body shapes. Examples of concern include (but are not limited to):

  • Textured shapes
  • Complex body poses and shapes
  • Obstructions (e.g., clothing/apparel)
  • Quality of output of devices (such as sensors and/or scanners)
  • Privacy provisions of data
  • The inclusion of population data

The IEEE 3D Body Processing Standards Group collaborates with other standard development organizations (SDOs) to help ensure there are harmonized objectives and work to encourage interoperability and synergy with other industry standards.
