Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: IEEE Standard for Integrated Services (IS) LAN Interface at the Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) Layers

PUBLISH DATE 1996
PAGES 336
IEEE 802.9a-1995
Amendment Standard - Inactive-Withdrawn. The architecture, frame structure, service specifications, Physical (PHY) Layer, management, and signalling of the ISLAN16-T interface are defined. The relationship of the ISLAN16-T network to the ISO/IEC 8802-3 network is also defined.
Globally networked multimedia applications impose distinct quality of service (QOS) requirements on the local area network (LAN) infrastructure. These applications, which integrate video, audio, and data services, allow for real-time interactive communication between peer entities, requiring the network to provide essential QOS attributes (i.e., guaranteed bandwidth, delay and delay variation, latency, and reliability). Furthermore, to enhance the worker's productivity in the global workplace, the LAN has to provide for interoperability with the wide area network (WAN).
