Germicidal UV and Visible Wavelength Devices: Nomenclature and Reporting Requirements

PUBLISH DATE 2026
"This document focuses on germicidal ultraviolet (UV) and certain visible wavelength devices (i.e., products or equipment) that claim to inactivate pathogens in air and on surfaces using wavelengths primarily in the range of 200–500 nm. The requirements describe the type of information, labeling, and/or device specifications that shall be made available concerning the devices and suggested format for presentation. The devices included in the scope include germicidal UV and visible wavelength devices that are intended for operation in spaces that are occupied during the disinfection process as well as devices that are restricted to operation only when a space is unoccupied. Devices that are not included in the scope include devices intended for water disinfection, disinfection cabinets, portable air purifiers (aka air cleaners) with enclosed germicidal devices, in-duct systems, handheld devices, food treatment, and FDA Class II medical devices. This definition also excludes isolated device components (e.g., lamps, LEDs) and/or device accessories that have to be combined with other components in order to operate."
